What is Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)?
Around two children in every classroom of 30 have Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), yet many families have never heard of it.
DLD is a lifelong condition that affects how a child understands and uses spoken language. A child with DLD may find it difficult to follow instructions, learn and remember new words, put sentences together, explain their ideas or join in conversations.
These difficulties are not caused by low intelligence, laziness or poor parenting. DLD can look different from one child to another, and the signs are not always easy to recognise.
Identifying a child's communication strengths and needs can help families, schools and professionals put appropriate support in place.
